Our client is a major player in the Australian Energy and Power industry, leading the transition to Australia’s clean energy future.

The Opportunity 

This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Legal Counsel to support upcoming major infrastructure projects.

Our client is open to candidates 5-7 pqe who will report to Snr Projects Counsel’s and Candidates 7+ pqe who will have more autonomy to manage projects independently based on their experience.

The role of the Legal Counsel includes but is not limited to: 

  • Review and negotiate contracts and associated documents for major infrastructure projects and provide the business with front-end advice

  • Identify key project commercial and legal risks and prepare proposed solutions

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders on all aspects of the projects

  • Work closely with external counsel on various aspects of the project

  • Provide advice on the administration of contracts

  • Ensure internal policies, procedures and relevant Commonwealth or State-based licences and authorisations are appropriately interpreted and complied with by the business

  • Prepare and effectively communicate advice to executives and senior managers on the legal aspects of activities

  • Undertake legal research tasks in various areas of law

  • Assist with ad hoc requests from various teams in the organisation

  • Liaise with government officials, departments or tribunals on matters

  • Be proactive in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Communicate effectively and persuasively with many internal clients and external parties

  • Assist with the co-ordination and assessment of external legal counsel

  • Deliver training to various parts of business (as and when required).

  • Assist with the development and implementation of best practice tools and processes for the Legal Team

Skills & Experience 

What we expect from you: 

  • Admitted (or able to be admitted) as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales

  • 5-10 years projects experience (preferably gained in private practice and in-house)

  • Strong commercial drafting, reviewing and negotiating skills

  • Demonstrated experience working on large infrastructure projects

  • Highly capable in identifying and understanding commercial and legal risks

  • Ability to be team-focused and also work independently

  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) to liaise, on a daily basis, with internal and external stakeholders

  • Although not essential, exposure to other key areas of law (Energy/National Electricity Rules, Property, Planning & Environment and Employment) would be highly regarded
